To My Son

Dear Drew,

Words cannot express my honor and my pride at being your Daddy. You bring me such joy and hope. God gave you to me and I am eternally thankful.

There are many times that I feel inadequate to be your Daddy. My imperfections weigh me down, but God uses you and your sister to lift my spirits. When I look at you I see hope for the future. I see a boy who, by God's grace, can grow into a godly man who will have the opportunity and the talent to make a positive difference among God's people.

This past Sunday night as I watched the Preacher Pals lead the worship assembly, my heart warmed as I listened to you recite the books of the New Testament, read from the Bible, and name the Major Prophets from the Old Testament. I realize that there is a lot of pressure on you since you are the "Preacher's Son." Drew, do not listen to those other voices that tell you what you should be or what you should do. Listen for God's voice and allow Him to lead you. You will always have my support as you walk such a path.

Drew, I did not choose the ministry. God chose me for the ministry. His choice of me has caused me much frustration. I have questioned the calling. I have proclaimed my unworthiness at filling such a position. For some reason, though, God has placed me where I am today. He knows the number of reasons I should not serve in full-time ministry, yet He has kept me here.

I do not know what you will end up becoming when you grow up, Drew. I do know this -- if God wants you in full-time ministry, He will place you in such a position. Until (and if) that time comes, follow your dreams. Live life completely. Be a person of faith, hope, love, and integrity.

And one more thing: remember that you have a Daddy who loves you unconditionally and is both humbled and honored to be your Father.

You, my son, are and always will be, my favorite Preacher Pal.

I love you,
Daddy

The Steel Curtain defense again pitched a shut-out, concluding the season by not allowing a single score. Congratulations to Anna Walter (sweeper), Ashley Keel (sweeper) and Hannah Brewster (goalie) who guarded the goal with perfection.

Cobain's Legacy Grows

From Yahoo.com (via AFP)

Angst-ridden grunge rocker Kurt Cobain has pushed Elvis into second place in a list of highest-earning dead celebrities, with the late Nirvana frontman raking in 50 million dollars in the past year.

The Forbes.com website ranks 13 celebrities pushing up daisies on their income and proves that death need not be an obstacle to making money, with the group collectively earning 247 million dollars in the last year.

"Peanuts" creator Charles Schulz, whose cartoons are syndicated in thousands of newspapers worldwide, came third after earning 35 million dollars, ahead of John Lennon with 24 million and Albert Einstein with 20 million.

The German-born physicist's earnings come from rights to use his famously unkempt image and the Baby Einstein line of educational toys from Walt Disney.

Another cartoonist, creator of the Dr Seuss series Theodor Geisel, ranks seventh, one place behind Andy Warhol but ahead of Ray Charles and Marilyn Monroe, whose likeness continues to pay more than 40 years after her death.

While Elvis, who has been dead for almost 30 years, slipped to number two in the list for the first time since 2001, his estate still managed to earn 42 million dollars in the past 12 months.

J.R.R. Tolkein, the creator of the Lord of the Rings epic, slid three places since last year, but the success of the film trilogy, DVD sales and offshoot merchandise have continued to make a killing for the English writer.

Success of the Johnny Cash biopic "Walk the Line" helped the Man in Black avoid going into the red, pulling in eight million dollars for his heirs, while late Beatles guitarist George Harrison and reggae legend Bob Marley both earned some seven million dollars, mostly through CD sales and royalties.

Unstoppable!

Following an early season tie with a YMCA opponent, the Bulldogs soccer team circled the date on the calendar for the rematch. Saturday, they got their second shot to show who the better team is.

The first contest ended in a 0-0 standstill. Today's rematch was a much different game. Though starting slowly, the Bulldogs managed to take control against their older and bigger opponent in route to a 4-0 win. The victory removed any doubt as to who the dominant team in YMCA U-12 girls' soccer is.

Mandy Sparkman led the Bulldogs with two goals followed by Bailey Freeman and Ashley Faith who each contributed one goal a piece.

Bending, but never breaking, the Bulldog defense snuffed out any hope of scoring their opponent had by outhustling and outworking the other team. Hannah Brewster and Ashley Keel combined for another shutout in goal, while Anna Walter and a number of other players played staggering defense at the sweeper position, including Sabrina Smith who shutdown one of the other team's top players.

The Bulldogs resume play with a double-header this Saturday, October 28.

Weird

At halftime of the Monday night's Bears-Cardinals game, ESPN showed the world premiere of Jay-Z's new video (song is "Show Me What You Got"). What struck me as strange was the presence of redneck boy himself, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. in the video.

But the surprises did not end with Junior's cameo. Also appearing in the video is Danica Patrick. The scene I saw showed Jay-Z riding shotgun next to Junior, and they were racing Danica around tight turns and jagged cliffs.

Pretty creative.

I'm still confused, though. Is this a collaboration with NASCAR and the hip-hop industry to expand its fanbase? I thought Junior was a country music boy. Guess, he's a closet Jay-Z fan. And Danica? Well, she seems to like the publicity. Of course, everyone knows that Jay-Z is a big NASCAR fan.

Oh well, maybe it is a good thing. Maybe we can all get along.

Welcome back, Ben

Reports of Steelers' demise greatly exagerrated

PITTSBURGH -- It's easy to forget because of all he's accomplished so early in his career, but Ben Roethlisberger is still only 24 years old. Just a kid. Still learning what it takes to be a pro quarterback. Lately he's been learning how to handle adversity in the form of a losing streak, something he hasn't experienced a lot after winning 27 of his first 31 starts.

"We set the bar high," Roethlisberger said Sunday night. "We were bound to lose some games."

Roethlisberger's one of the league's young stars so he pretty much has it all except for all the answers. And he knows it. So, he asks for help. He did it after his historic rookie season when he needed advice on how to sustain his success into his sophomore year and he did it last week when he tapped mentors Jim Kelly and Dan Marino for some guidance through his recent struggles.

"I didn't come into the NFL thinking that I was going to win every single game I ever played," Roethlisberger said. "But the important thing is how you bounce back."
After a 45-7 rout of the Chiefs Sunday, yeah, you might say Big Ben and the Steelers are back.

And not just back, but back in the thick of things: The end to Pittsburgh's three-game losing streak coincided with division rivals Baltimore and Cincinnati both losing, leaving the Steelers (2-3) just one loss behind the Ravens and Bengals.
Roethlisberger, whose career quarterback rating coming into this season was a gaudy 98.3, found himself coming into Sunday's game against Kansas City behind everyone except for Oakland's Andrew Walter in the efficiency department. In his three starts -- all losses -- Roethlisberger had completed just 53.9 percent of his passes (down from 62.9 his first two seasons) with no touchdown passes, seven interceptions and a QB rating of 41.7. People had taken to calling Big Ben "007," as in no wins and no TD passes for No. 7.

The popular speculation, despite the fact that he was the star of the Steelers' training camp, was that he wasn't completely recovered from his offseason motorcycle accident or the appendectomy that kept him out of the season-opening win over Miami. That Big Ben had come back to soon. In fact -- it's funny -- just minutes before the game I was talking to a scout who said he thought Roethlisberger was overrated anyway and that, like a lot of people, he thought Roethlisberger was just a quarterback who previously merely had to manage a great team. Now that some of those pieces were no longer in place, now that everything wasn't going perfectly, the scout believed Roethlisberger was being exposed.

Everybody's entitled to their opinion. Mine? I say Big Ben's had more than a little to do with what the Steelers have done the past two seasons. But this much is fact: The only thing that got exposed Sunday was the Chiefs' supposedly improved defense.
Kansas City came in ranked fourth overall, fourth against the pass, and having allowed just 52 points in four games. Pittsburgh nearly doubled that total and Roethlisberger picked apart the Chiefs to the tune of 16-for-19 for 238 yards and two touchdowns. He also had three pass plays of 20 or more yards on the day.

Ben Ben's rating: 153.8.

Critics: silenced. For now, at least.

The victory "was big," Roethlisberger said. "We wanted to come out and play good football and prove people wrong. Prove the naysayers wrong. When you play bad, excuse me, it pisses you off. When I'm playing that way I know I'm not on. I think today was a better indication of the way we can play."
What Pittsburgh did was get back to playing Steeler football. Pittsburgh used balance to build an early lead then shut it down and protected it in the second half. The Steelers ran for 154 of its 219 rushing yards in the first half, including a 48-yard gallop by Najeh Davenport. Roethlisberger hit on 13-of-15 in the first half, with a 50-yard catch and run by Santonio Holmes and a 47-yard TD catch and run by Nate Washington. Roethlisberger had a 21.6 fourth-quarter passer rating coming in but didn't improve that figure Sunday because he didn't have to throw a pass in the final quarter and didn't even play the final 12 minutes 40 seconds. That's Bill Cowher's blueprint, which the Steelers weren't able to execute in their losses. Pittsburgh finally played the complete game they'd been talking about during the losing streak.

As for the victorious quarterback, Roethlisberger said the key was, "Being smart. Throwing to the guys in the black jerseys, not the white jerseys." (Do you think he read my blog?)The guys in the white jerseys, the Chiefs, often didn't get close enough to Roethlisberger to disrupt the Steelers' passing game, allowing him plenty of time to find receivers who'd found holes in Kansas City's zone.

"We hope this can be a turning point for us," Roethlisberger said. "We didn't have our heads down. We didn't think this was a do-or-die situation. We knew we had to come out and play good football, and I think we did a good job of that."

Big Ben was asked if he were ready to declare himself back.
"Not yet," he replied. "I won't say that yet."

Don't count the champs out of the AFC North race, not yet. He may not say it, but for now, at least, Big Ben and the Steelers are indeed back.

Weekend Sweep!

Three games in two days yielded three wins for the Bulldogs as they continue their dominance in both YMCA and Cabosa soccer leagues.

The Bulldogs played two games on Saturday in less than two hours. However, the multi-game day did not slow down the Bulldog attack.

Game One: Bulldogs win 3-0
Despite the low score, the Bulldogs controlled the game from start to finish. Bailey Freeman led all scorers with three goals, followed by Ashley Faith with one goal. The Bulldog defense pitched another shut-out and Anna Walter continued her stellar defensive play. The game witnessed the interchanging of positions for Bulldog players. Offensive players worked on the defensive side of the field, and defensive players tried their hand at offense. All in all, the game was a testament to the depth of the Bulldogs.

Game Two: Bulldogs win 8-1
In the second game played on Saturday, the Bulldogs came charging out of the gates in route to a 8-1 throttling of their opposition. Bailey Freeman led all scorers with four goals, and four other Bulldogs contributed one goal each: Sabrina Smith, Mandy Sparkman, Ashley Faith and Rebecca Shumate. Kudos also go the Bulldogs' steel curtain defense. Ashley Keel (at sweeper) and Hannah Brewster (in goal) helped set the tone on the defensive side. Once again, strong play characterized both sides of the ball as the Bulldogs cruised to an easy win.

Game Three: Bulldogs win 7-0
In a Sunday matinee contest, the Bulldogs faced their first Cabosa opponent in a rematch of the season's first contest.

Showing that they are indeed a great team, the Bulldogs exhibited team play that proved to be unstoppable. Bailey Freeman led the team with three goals, while Ashley Faith, Sabrina Smith and Brandie Browne each contributed one goal a piece. Goalie Hannah Brewster even got in on the scoring action, by registering her first goal of the season.

The undefeated Bulldogs resume play this Saturday, October 21.

Haunted Church

In a conversation the other day with the Facilities Manager at the church where I attend, the subject of paranormal sightings was discussed.

Phil (the Facilities Manager) is usually at the campus during odd hours. He tries to make sure all the buildings are locked and everything is secure. He also arrives early during the work week and before special events to make sure that doors are unlocked and everything looks okay.

I am not sure how the subject first came up, but Phil shared something that happened to him a few months ago. It was early in the morning and he was walking through the main facility, specifically what we call the "small auditorium" (basically a fellowship hall) when something caught his eye. As he walked past the room he thought he saw a woman sitting in the dark with a baby stroller next to her. He walked a few more steps before stopping and taking a second look. When he looked again, there was no one in there, but Phil (who is not a believer in the paranormal)is convinced he saw something.

Church buildings late at night or in the wee hours of the morning are known as creepy places. Sit in one late at night and count the number of sounds you hear. Hold tightly to the flashlight as your eyes begin to play tricks on you.

I believe Phil's story is worth exploring. Isn't that what Fox Mulder would do? Anyone up for an all-nighter at the church campus? C'mon, I'll bring the night vision goggles. We're talking a possible X-File here! (breathe easy -- usually apparitions do not mean harm).

Anyway, anyone out there in internet-land have any haunted church stories?

For the record: I believe Phil did see something, but I'll save that for another blog entry.

Good

Life is good.

I am married to a beautiful woman who loves me unconditionally and is truly concerned about helping me get to heaven. Mendy is a model of commitment and godliness. She is always truthful, always prayerful, and always faithful. I really married "above my head." Mendy is far stronger than people give her credit for being. She is much more compassionate than people realize. And she could write a book on love and forgiveness. She has walked a tough road (unknown to others) that would put her on the level of sainthood, if she ever shared her story. She is truly one of God's amazing servants.

I am also blessed to have two incredible children: Hannah and Drew. Truth be told, I enjoy hanging out with my kids. They keep me focused, they make me laugh, and they love me for who I am. Writing a book about what they mean to me would take little effort. They are more than I could have asked for in children. I am honored to be their Daddy.

This is my family: Mendy, Hannah and Drew. Nothing will change that fact. What we have comes from God. No one can or will ever take that away.

Life is good.

Bulldogs Dominate!

In a staggering display of team offense, the Bulldogs dominated the Tigers, 5-0 in a Monday evening contest.

From the outset of the game there was no doubt that the Bulldogs were in control. Both the offensive and defensive units played effectively in rendering the opponent with very few opportunities past mid-field.

Scoring for the Bulldogs were: Bailey Freeman, Madi Walter, Ashton Ammerman, Rebecca Shumate, and Ashley Keel. Also providing potent offense was Mandy Sparkman and Ashley Faith.

Maintaining mid-field was the always reliable Breanna Black, along with Connor Moore, Rachel Shumate, and Sabrina Smith, who once again provided a spark to the Bulldogs.

The defensive unit was once again impenetrable, dismantling any scoring attempts by the Tigers. Anna Walter and Ashley Keel, both in the sweeper position, shut down the Tigers the few times they made it to the Bulldogs' side of the field. And once again, Hannah Brewster was the gatekeeper, protecting the goal, despite recovering from a bike accident suffered the day before.

The win keeps the Bulldogs undefeated in YMCA play. The Bulldogs are scheduled to play three contests this upcoming weekend.

Woe, Woe, Woe

1-3?

Steelers' quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is on a blistering pace to set a personal record ...

for interceptions thrown in a season.

Two more picks on Sunday night takes his season total to nine.

Something is amiss.

These are tough days for the Steeler nation.

Prayer

My God,

Understanding is not mine. Walking after you I frequently stumble. Your Word remains clear and echoes through the walls of my heart, yet other voices whisper in my ear. They tell me that wrong is easily turned to right, and that selfishness is compatible with faithfulness. They have pursued me and declared that your mercy is something easily trampled upon.

But I know that you never fail. I realize that you are eternally faithful. Forgive me for embracing the allure of this world by disregarding the life that is mine in Jesus. Teach me to remain steadfast, to pursue truth, and to live in holiness.

"Create in me a clean heart, O God:
And renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from thy presence;
And take not thy holy Spirit from me.
Restore unto me the joy of your salvation
And renew a right spirit within me."*

"The one thing I ask of the Lord -- the thing I seek the most --
is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord's perfections and meditating in his Temple.

For he will conceal me there when troubles come;
He will hide me in his sanctuary.
He will place me out of reach on a high rock.
Then I will hold my head high, above my enemies who surround me.
At his Tabernacle I will offer sacrifices with shouts of joy,
singing and praising the Lord with music."*

Who have I, but you Jesus? In you I place my hope, surrender my love, and pour out my soul. In Christ alone.

Amen.

History

Matthew West has an interesting take on history. Here it is:

It's been a bad day
You've been looking back
And all you can see is everything you wish you could take back
All your mistakes
A world of regrets
All of those moments you would rather forget
I know it's hard to believe
Let me refresh your memory

[Chorus]
Yesterday is history
And history is miles away
So, leave it all behind you
But let it always remind you of the day
The day that love made history

You know you can't stay right where you fell
The hardest part is forgiving yourself
But let's take a walk into today
And don't let your past get in the way

Would you believe that you are history in the making?
Every choice that you are making
Every step that you are taking
Every chain that you are breaking
History is in the making
Every word that you are saying
Every prayer that you are praying
Every chain that you are breaking
History is in the making

Slogan

One special ministry at the congregation where I attend is directed toward boys in the 2nd-5th grades. It is called "Preacher Pals," and the purpose of the ministry is to teach the boys how to minister to others.

The other day I suggested this ministry have a slogan. How about a t-shirt that has "Preacher Pals" written on it? The boys voiced their approval. How about a sleeveless, muscle t-shirt with "Preacher Pals" on it? The boys gave even more resounding approval to this idea.

Then, a cool thought entered my mind, but I could not share it with this group of boys. So, faithful blog readers, here is my suggestion for a slogan to put on a sleeveless, muscle shirt:

PREACHER PALS: We'll beat the hell out of you

What do you think?

Ties That Bind

The Bulldogs' soccer team continued its tough schedule with another multi-game lineup this past Saturday. Pitted against tough competition in both contests, the Bulldogs battled fiercely and emerged from Saturday with no wins and no losses.

Game #1 -- Bulldogs tie 0-0
In Saturday's first contest, the Bulldogs (comprised of 4th graders) faced a team of 6th graders. Though outsized, the Bulldogs put pressure on the other team's defense and managed several close shots on goal. The teams tied in regulation and the Bulldogs seemed to control the overtime period, but were unable to generate any goals.

Game #2 -- Bulldogs tie 1-1
In the second game, the Bulldogs faced a well-coached and determined Cabosa opponent. Despite having played a tough contest just a few hours before, the Bulldogs refused to surrender to their well-rested opponent.

Bailey Freeman scored the only goal for the Bulldogs and Hannah Brewster provided sensational play in goal.

Although the Bulldogs would have preferred a win, they engaged in a tough fought game and came away with a tie.
